Intro

Now that we have filmed our Interviews and shot footage from our Hurst Point Lighthouse Trip, the process of editing the documentary can begin. The purpose of this documentary is to present the creative journey of developing Keeper’s Veil thus far. I will be using Premiere Pro.

Visuals

Three different types of footage will be featured in the documentary: our interviews, videos from our trip to the lighthouse, and clips of the game/us working on it.

Firstly, the interviews - which I had cut from upwards of forty minutes to around five - separated nicely into three sections: about us/Keeper’s Veil, the creative process, and our hopes for the game’s future. Each section has 3-4 questions which will be split up by cut-aways to short clips of our lighthouse trip; showing we are moving onto a new answer.

To make the documentary more visually interesting, as the audio from the interview continues to play, I will cut to short B-roll clips that relate to whatever we are talking about at the time. For example, there is a section in the interview where we speak about experimenting with different art styles, so I will include footage of Procreate time-lapses and physical Painting.

Audio

Often, documentaries will include background music to accompany speech; but these tracks must correspond to our brand and Keeper’s Veil’s themes. In my opinion, classical music would be best; tracks that feature a violin or piano with somewhat sombre undertones to emphasise the solemn atmosphere of our game.

As mentioned before, the interview clips have been sorted into three parts so it would make sense to give each section its own piece of music. This change in music will help identify the different interview sections while also making the video more engaging.

These are the tracks I have chosen and downloaded from a free music website:

I will also include some sound effects of waves and seagulls during the short clips that separate the interview questions, as well as the sound of a clunky button click to transition between the A-roll and B-roll footage; mimicking Keeper’s Veil’s main mechanic of using a radio.

When it comes to mixing the audio, I will create almost a wave effect by increasing and decreasing each track at certain points in the video so that everything sounds smooth, rather than hard cuts. For example, as an interview clip transitions into a separating B-roll clip, our voices and the music will get quieter (by only a few decibels) and the sound effects will get louder before reversing back.
