Intro

As a quick side-project, I wanted a logo that could easily and simply represent our brand and can be used for all kinds of marketing formats. This logo would represent us as the developers as well as the key aspect of the game, with a fitting font to match. Read to the end to see the final result!

Research

For starters, I looked into some example style logos to get an idea of presentation, readability, style, etc. As our theme is based around the sea, I decided that something gothic, nautical and mysterious was the way to go. Some games within those genres included ‘Sea of Thieves’ and ‘Hollow Knight’, which are exactly the style of logo I believe will look best for the game.

I want this logo to include the serpent in one way or another. I want the logo to be somewhat similar to the poster I designed a few weeks ago.

I also looked into snakes, as our serpent design is based on their shape.

I was particularly interested in how they open their mouths to reveal teeth, which invokes danger and terror. I used these silhouettes as an outline for a fantasy-inspired serpent of the sea.

The design is going to be in black so that it can be used on all backgrounds, so I did not pay mind to colour. I just wanted the image to be clear and powerful in its message with as few details as possible.

Concepts

I began with quick-fire ideas based around my research. For the time being, I wanted to prioritise the shape over the font as it will be easier to work around.

I used a lot of similar shapes for the designs, including the lighthouse and the serpent. I want the logo to explain the main point of the story and intrigue the audience. I struggled a lot with placement of the text and I wanted to keep a gothic theme throughout.

I landed on three out of all the initial designs and made cleaner versions of them. I felt that these ones worked best in creating a seamless, visually attractive logo without that stays in lines with the games intentions. I was drawn to the idea of using the serpent to frame the text, which would not only look good online but also as merchandise in the future. With some discussion with Millie, we felt that all the designs had their pros and cons:
